Just Got Moved out of the Dorms

I lived in the dorms when I was a freshman and I pretty much hated it. It was pretty awkward living in the same room with a random stranger and the guy I got was really quite off. It was not like he was frightening or anything of that sort, but he was very odd and a real pain to deal with when he did not get his way. Now I am living with five other guys in this enormous house about five blocks from the campus. We got the Direct TV current offer, which was around 20 dollars per month plus about five dollars a month more per box. Since there are six of us we actually needed seven boxed, so it was fifty dollars per month when it all came out.

How to Become a Professional Newscaster

Newscasters are journalists who read the news and interview subjects for a television or radio audience. A professional newscaster is authoritative and understands the topics being covered. A bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications typically provides the basis for a career in broadcasting. Newscasters often move into the position after working as an intern and then a live-scene reporter.

Learn to apply makeup properly when going before the cameras.

Start in School

  • During your college career, get as much experience as you can work with the college’s radio and television stations and studios. Some schools offer a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting, which may provide more hands-on training than you’ll receive at a typical journalism school. In addition to your bachelor’s degree, consider going online and taking one of the tafe courses, where you can earn a certificate that will boost your credibility.

Develop Strong Speaking Skills

  • It’s vital that you develop a strong, clear voice. According to the Poynter Institute, only those professionals with perfect grammar who enunciate well and correctly pronounce names and words will make it as a professional newscaster. Take public speaking courses or hire a voice coach to help you develop your projection. Create a demo to deliver to potential employers that depicts your command of the English language and your poise on screen.

Become a News Junkie

  • To effectively deliver the news over the air, you need to have a clear understanding of the news about which you’re reporting. Newscasters can’t rely 100 percent on cue cards but need to know about the topics they cover. Journalists who become newscasters are committed to devouring news in the area where they work and in industries they cover. Additionally, newscasters often have to report on events as they occur and won’t be able to rely strictly on cue cards.

Learn the Art of Interviewing

  • You’ll be a more effective interviewer if you have a solid base of understanding of the industries and news that affect your subjects as well. Work as a reporter on your college newspaper or for a community paper to develop the finesse required to be a successful interviewer. Practice really listening to people and asking follow-up questions. Take a psychology course to help you understand people better and the types of questions that motivate answers. Learn how to control an interview, how to end it and how to manage your body language to get the most out of your subjects when conducting live interviews.

The Best Areas in the United States for Job Opportunities

Map of United States.
Historically, people flock to big cities in search of job opportunities because they tend to have better chances than in rural and suburban areas. Not every major city, however, is constantly experiencing employment growth. For example, USA Today notes that among those with a negative outlook are Memphis, Tenn. and Chicago, Ill. The status of the employed versus the unemployed fluctuates regularly, often following the economy’s lead. When searching for an opportune place to relocate, consider business climates, educated labor forces and low costs in the area.

Notable Regions

  • The cities of Austin, Round Rock and San Marcos, Texas, have the best prospects for job growth as indicated by employment gains between 2008 and 2013, according to Milken Institute data reported in the Business Insider in January 2014. At the same time, Moody’s Analytics, a global economic forecasting company, found that Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, Idaho and Utah would see job growth because of factors such as steady home construction and investments in the aerospace industry.

High-Traffic Spots

  • Using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data from between 2000 and 2012, Forbes Magazine reports that Houston, Sugar Land and Baytown, Texas, along with Salt Lake City, Utah, had a year-on-year employment growth of 3.3 percent, good indicators of future growth. Forbes and the Milken Institute’s research agree that San Jose, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara, Calif., would see growth in job opportunities, and that neighboring cities San Francisco, San Mateo and Redwood City would follow suit. The Milken Institute also notes growth in Seattle, Bellevue and Everett, Wash.

Average-Size Locations

  • Based on BLS data from 2000 to 2012, Forbes published a list of mid-size cities that offer the most employment opportunities and room for growth. It found that Lafayette, La., boasted a year-on-year growth of 5.2 percent. Areas of Texas made the list, including Corpus Christi, McAllen, Edinburg, Mission and El Paso. Additionally, Forbes reports an increasing number of positions in Knoxville, Tenn., and in Charleston, North Charleston and Summerville, S.C.

Small Town Options

  • Areas with lower populations still have plenty of job opportunities and room for growth, including those in the Texas cities of Odessa, Midland and San Angelo. Forbes notes Columbus, Indiana had a year-on-year employment growth of 10.2 percent. It reports Casper, Wyo., and Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Radford, Va. also look optimistic. The Milken Institute’s study showed some of the best small city prospects would be found in Columbia, Mo., Bismarck, N.D. and Fargo, N.D-Minn.

One should reach from each center line down the arm to the elbow. Another should reach from each elbow to each wrist. Legs should each have one strip of tape from the center of the waist band to the knee and another from the knee to bottom of the pant leg.

Step 6:Hook up the other side of the body. Flip the outfit over and repeat the tape outline for the back of the garments.

Tips on Designing Club Flyers for the Employment Sector

The employment sector is all about careers and jobs. Businesses in these sectors are all about helping students and people get suitable employment. Some institutions help the people discover what the right career for them is while others tend to help in the job search. Be that as it may, the fact remains that these institutions need to market their services so that more people get to know about them.

You need the right kind of marketing tool though. Club flyers are a fine option due to the benefits that they can provide. On the other hand, you can only enjoy those benefits if you ensure that the design of the club flyers is good. In the employment sector, the need for making a good impression is often emphasized. The same applies to the flyers.

Getting an Excellent Design

Due to the immense importance of making a strong impression on the customers, you must pay attention to the design of your flyers. A flyer design consists of a variety of elements that must be considered for the best overall effect.

Fonts: The choice of fonts will depend on the style you are hoping to achieve with the design. Be that as it may, the fonts should remain legible. People often have difficulty in understanding what is written if the fonts are complicated.

Font Size: The font size should not be anything lower than 10 points. Again, the aim is to ensure readability. Some elements such as the headline and the call to action can have a larger font size for the sake of emphasis.

Colors: Using a full color scheme can strengthen the impression made on the reader. However, the colors should be used in a sensible manner. They should be complementary to each other. The colors chosen should also allow the text to be read easily. If there is a background image, the colors need to be selected accordingly. Avoid using too many colors unnecessarily.

Images: In order to make the flyers more impressive, you can add a few images to the flyer. Background images are a good option. Remember to use images of a high quality so that they look good after printing VIP. Make sure that the images are relevant to the information on the flyer.

Company Information: It is essential that you mention your company or institution information on the flyer. After all, people should be able to recognize that your organization is the one behind the awesome flyer. More importantly, the flyer will have no marketing value whatsoever if people do not know which organization made it. Include the logo of your organization as well.

Headline: The headline is important as it outlines the main information that the flyer will provide to the reader. For that reason, the headline should be interesting and catchy. Keep it short as well so that people can read it and get the gist with just a glance.

Designing a flyer can be an intimidating prospect for those who haven’t done it before. However, with these easy tips, a good result can be achieved.

Ask yourself these questions about your roof

Most people who need to repair their roof ask themselves some form of the following questions: do I go with an experienced contractor like http://www.bestrooferil.com/champaign-roofing/ that would charge a significant fee? How much money can I save by buying my own materials? Is it possible for me to repair the roof on my own. Weigh your options before making a decision. Honestly, if there are any qualms that you have with your own personal ability to complete a project, it is best to defer to professionals, especially if you have issues with any of the following in particular:

Starting a major roof repair or replacement by yourself (if you are inexperienced).

Unless you are a member of the select few in the world that have extensive knowledge of the machinations of a roof, it is probably best to leave the work to professionals. This is especially true if your plan is a full replacement. It is almost unimaginable to think that an average “do it yourselfer” could completely remove an old roof and install a new one without something going awry. Attempting to do this by yourself is almost always made as part of a misguided effort to save a few dollars that ends in footing a far larger bill than was originally necessary.

Not hiring a solid contractor.

Make sure that you do your homework. Find a reputable contractor to perform work on your home. Price should not be the sole consideration to make when hiring a contractor. Talk to people who you are friendly with — friends, family, coworkers, etc. — about companies that they might have used in the past. Most people forget that they have access to the Better Business Bureau records to see reviews and ratings. Since you want a company with integrity and a great reputation.

Career advice for the undecided students

Everyone hankers after a well-paid and cushy job which would not only create a substantial bank-balance but also be creatively satisfying as well! But to go on to have the coveted job one must tread on the arduous path with care. A student goes through many trials and tribulations. The top most concern plaguing his/her mind would be what would be the career most suitable for me? Students would be plagued by indecisiveness and would want someone to show them the right path towards their career goals.

Who all needs career Advice?

Career advice is usually sought by people who are on the brink of their careers. Unsure of an uncertain future they are also inexperienced and incapable of taking informed decisions which would pave their path to a fruitful career. Career counselors could come to help at this critical juncture and give them the much needed boost of confidence. There have been instances when a fairly good student has been forced to take up mathematics and consequently a career in engineering because she has fetched good marks in science and math. But fetching good marks in a particular subject does not necessarily mean that she would be inclined towards science? Instead of backing the child’s abilities and interests all they really do is push the child into a career which would give her nothing but make misery. A career can only be satisfying when interests and inclination come together and creates the right pedestal for the candidate to grow to the greatest height in his/her chosen career.

Your Career Perspective

People’s perception towards their career is undergoing a sea change. More and more people understand the importance of career counseling. They are trying to free themselves from shackles concerning their age old perceptions and beliefs. A career counselor can help the student find his/her innate interests and aptitude with the help of psychometric tests. For example  a candidate can be unaware of his/her own talents with the help of these psychometric tests the candidate would be able to know the various hidden traits which would help them choose the right career for themselves. Would someone like Barkha Dutt, an eminent journalist, be as successful? Or someone like Vishwanathan Anand would be happy sitting in an office doing a nine to five job? Can we imagine famous people being successful in alternative careers? We cannot imagine that but how can be imagining getting satisfied with a career we are not completely happy about. Why can’t we give ourselves the opportunity to seek a career which would suit us?

 Parent’s Role

A parent’s role is the most important aspect in selecting their child’s career. Right from nourishing their interests, influencing their subject choices and ultimately selecting their career. A parent can influence the careers of their children in numerous ways. So they are the ones who should make their wards understand the importance of career counseling. If they want the best for their children and ensure that they live a happy and a life bereft of care and worries they must seek professional help. It was not long ago that a candidate who wanted to pursue a different stream far removed from conventional jobs would be ridiculed and forced to take up a job which they thought would fetch money and a secure future. Unconventional careers were considered a taboo and parents ensured that they only chose that career which was approved by the society in general. But today that age old notions are considered  passé now parents are as proud if their wards become a rocket scientist or if they choose an unconventional career a la’ donning a chef’s hat or sharpening his/her business acumen. There are now a plethora of jobs to choose from. So the concerned parent should ensure to take their wards to a career counselor and sort out their career predicaments.

Career Counseling and your Future

Career counseling can impact your career in more ways than one. Besides choosing the career which would be right for you they can ask you to upgrade your education by doing a number of courses which would hugely benefit your career. If you are at a loss as to which course would help you to enhance your career you should leave all your worries aside and can pursue your career single-mindedly without worrying about all paltry nitty-gritties.  It is difficult to keep yourself abreast of the number of courses doing the rounds. These would be taken care of by the career counselor.

Help Yourself!

  • Instill faith in yourself! That’s the least you can do for yourself! If you don’t believe that you can reach for the stars nobody would be there to help you. Start early, as soon as you are in your middle school or high school you have to resort to planning for your future. Hone your skills in the best possible way. Preparing for your future would give you the solid foundation to build up your career and climb the rungs of the success ladder slowly but surely. “Desire is the key to motivation, but its determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal a commitment to excellence that will enable you to attain the success you seek.” – Mario Andretti.

Frequently Asked Questions about Asbestos

Whether you’re already working in the field, or are considering getting a job as an asbestos analyst, you’re likely to have some questions about the substance. These questions are extremely important to answer, especially if you are considering employment in this particular line of work. As you know, asbestos is a dangerous substance that has caused health problems for many people over the last few decades. The information below should prove helpful to you before you enter this important field.

Why Is Asbestos Dangerous?

Asbestos leads to around five thousand worker deaths each year, either from current exposure, or from past exposure. It can be especially dangerous because it was used so commonly up until about the year 2000. Asbestos is most dangerous when its fibres become airborne. Once they are released into the air, these fibres can be inhaled or otherwise ingested, and this can result in serious illness. Normally, these illnesses will not be apparent immediately, but can take years to develop. Asbestos can result in cancers like mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs and the digestive system. This particular cancer is almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure, but the problems don’t end there. Asbestosis is a serious condition that results in the scarring of the lungs after prolonged exposure to the substance. This condition can lead to serious pain, shortness of breath, and other symptoms that can result in death. It’s obvious that this is a very serious problem, but it’s also important to understand a couple of other facts about this chemical.

Where Is Asbestos Found?

The reason that these analyst jobs are necessary is because this substance was so commonly used in residential and commercial construction. Now, it needs to be removed from many locations to prevent people from becoming seriously ill. For that reason, it’s important to know where this chemical can be found. It was used as an insulator, so it can be found in floor tiles, construction glue, linoleum, window caulking and glazing, some roofing materials, duct insulation, and even in some paint.

Does Asbestos Always Need to Be Removed?

There’s a general public understanding that asbestos has to be removed from homes and commercial buildings in order for them to be safe. In reality, this is rarely the case as the material is only dangerous under certain circumstances. If the materials mentioned above are not deteriorating but are in good condition, the asbestos within those items is generally not harmful. Removing the materials can actually cause more of a problem than simply leaving the items exactly how they are. The real danger comes from when these kinds of materials have been damaged over time. Sawing, scraping, and sanding these materials can cause dangerous chemicals to be released into the air, which would then create a health hazard. This issue is usually created when someone does not know that asbestos has been used in the construction of his or her building. If they decide to remodel their building, this will usually involve some form of demolition, which can create obvious problems. For asbestos analyst jobs visit Future Select.

Career Occupational Testing

Career occupational testing is a standardized procedure used to assess an individual’s strengths, weaknesses, values and personality traits for different professions. In addition to helping test takers explore career options, occupational testing is used by HR departments to select the best candidates for job openings.

There are various occupational tests that students and professionals can take to determine their skill level and personality type.

Function

  • By using tools such as personality questionnaires and cognitive ability tests, career occupational exams help counselors and employers determine an employee’s eligibility for promotion and predict training needs. The tests also help test takers identify their leadership style, work-setting preferences and internal and external motivators.

Types

  • While career occupational testing examines professionals’ overall intelligence, some tests focus on typing ability, spelling and grammar, behavioral responses to specific situations and computer skills. Other occupational tests identify personality types and personal values.

Considerations

  • Career counselors and employers must consider whether occupational testing is cost-effective and appropriate for job placement. Test takers must evaluate how to integrate occupational test results into their job search, while employers must determine the best way to incorporate the results into their selection process for qualified candidates.

How Does Personality Affect Occupational Choice?

Many different studies and theories have been developed related to personality in all of its complexity. Most of these are based upon character traits, including how people react with the world around them. Many of these traits affect people’s life choices, including occupation, whether they are aware of it or not. In general, most extroverts lean toward more social occupations, while introverts often end up in occupations with more solitude.

Your occupation often reflects your personality.

It Starts Early

  • Personality’s influence on job choice starts early and is often shaped directly by tests given in high school. These include everything from personality tests to entrance examinations. Personality tests can play a major role as they match potential occupations with the personality type of the test-taker. These types of tests are intended to guide a student toward occupational choices ideal for their personality and away from ones that might counter their personality. An example would be a student who rates high in analytical categories receiving recommendations toward engineering, medical, or computer science fields.

Personality and Employers

  • Some employment opportunities require applicants to take exams, often including personality tests. This places the personality as a key determinant of whether a person does or does not get a position. If someone is rejected for a position because of a personality mismatch, it becomes more likely that the next occupational choice will lean toward a different field.

Influence on Job Performance

  • The reason personality is critical is that in some jobs a person with a personality not suited to the job will perform far worse than a well-suited person. Put an introvert in a job that requires constant communication, and you might be looking at someone that performs poorly on a day-to-day basis. Other fields, such as creative and design fields, need to be occupied by people with an aptitude for inventiveness. Mismatches can produce poor job performance and ultimately lead to alternative career choices.

Choices and Opportunity

  • Success isn’t always about matching a job to a personality; it can also result from the personality opening up more opportunities in the work force – often through effective networking. Extroverts tend to have a much larger network than introverts, affecting the number of external connections they have to the work force. This will place them at a distinct advantage if it means they wind up with more occupational choices.

Even working jobs that seem menial can spark a related interest or lead to something bigger within any given field.
  4. Talk to people about their occupations. Learning about what other people do for a living can give you a sense of what a given job entails and whether you would like it or not. Try not to listen to others’ personal opinions about the job. If it sounds like something you’d like, find out as much as possible about it through career centers, libraries and the Internet.

How to Make Japanese Halloween Costumes

Vampires, witches, devils and ghosts can get so predictable as Halloween costumes. But you can make a new spin, and wow the crowd, when you dress up as something Japanese. You can make Japanese Halloween costumes with clothing items you may already have around the house or can find very easily at thrift or even department stores. Before you know it, all the vampires, witches, devils and ghosts will be bowing to you, as is the culture’s custom, when you make Japanese Halloween costumes.

Instructions

  1. Be a geisha. Wear a long skirt or dress topped with a kimono. You can find a bath robe that resembles a kimono or order an inexpensive one online. Pull all your hair into a top-knot bun, wear a straight, black wig, or slick all your hair back, securing at the top of your head. Add cat’s eye eyeliner, a bright lipstick and very pale white face powder. Grab an Oriental fan and you’re good to go.
  2. Go sumo. If you are incredibly daring, go shirtless and tie a black sash around your waist, with a square black scarf or piece of fabric tucked in the waistband in the front and back to cover your privates. Wear a pair of shorts underneath that cannot be seen under the scarves. Don a flesh colored shirt and tights if it’s cold or you’re embarrassed. Slick hair up into a top knot bun or wear a short black wig.
  3. Strike it up as a samurai. Find a long, silk bathrobe, preferably red, and find a long, rectangular scarf that can be draped around your shoulders with the two ends meeting in front of your chest. Tie a sash around your waist to secure the scarf in place. Tie another sash around your hairline as a makeshift headband. Get a plastic samurai sword or hook one up with cardboard and silver paint.
  4. Mimic a ninja. Dress in a black long-sleeved shirt, long pants and simple shoes and pull a ninja hood over your face. You can imitate a ninja mask with a black, nylon ski mask or even wrap scarves to achieve the desired effect. Rubber band the scarves at the back of your head so only your eyes peek out. Find a plastic sword and paint it black or use black cardboard cut into a sword shape.

The Difference Between Hobbies & Careers

Woman painting with easel along shoreline.
Because your career is where you spend a significant portion of your life, figuring out what you really want to do is one of the most important choices you will ever make. Confucius’ advice was: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” In this ideal scenario, you could take what you love to do, such as a favorite hobby, and turn it into what you do for a livelihood. For many, though, there is a significant difference between their hobbies and their careers.

Enjoyment vs. Ambition

  • The difference between your career and your hobby depends on the goal for each, whether it be ambition or enjoyment. A career is a profession or occupation that is specialized, focused and followed as your lifework. This requires a commitment to making progress and to excelling over time, which takes effort, practice and training. Hobbies, on the other hand, are defined as those activities you pursue for relaxation and pleasure. As such these are not considered a primary vocation. Those who have found the most fulfilling enjoyment in what they pursue for ambition have an enviable job.

Pleasure vs. Profit

  • While a career implies the job or business you pursue for your survival, you can also use hobbies to make money. Hobbies such as creative writing, painting, sewing, and woodworking offer you the ability to turn a profit from what you create. The difference between the two, at least for the IRS, depends on how profitable your hobby happens to be. Generally, you have to turn a profit three out of five years in order to declare an activity as a business.

Pleasure vs. Passion

  • Maybe you learned how to play the guitar for your love of music and found that you had a talent to turn it into a career. Hobbyists by definition will play in their own leisure time for their own enjoyment. Career guitarists practice hours upon end to hone their talent into a marketable skill. They work with professionals and play for live audiences in an ongoing attempt to perfect their craft. It is no longer simply something they want to do; it is something they are driven to do because of a desire to excel — quite in addition to a need to earn a living.

Play vs. Work

  • No offense to Confucius, but whenever you decide to turn your hobby into a career you introduce work into the equation. Turning a hobby into a career significantly ups the ante on your overall goals. Ultimately you define that which is work and that which is play by what you wish to gain out of either endeavor, as well as how much you wish to put into it. As writer David Bruce put it: “A man chopping wood for winter is working. A man chopping wood in a lumberjack contest is playing.”

How to Make Cyndi Lauper Halloween Costumes

Making a Cyndi Lauper Halloween costume is a fun and sexy way to bring back the 80s for a night. Cyndi Lauper is an iconic figure of the 80s, with hits such as “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Time after Time” and “True Colors.” She also served as a fashion idol for teens during the 80s. Girls flocked to mimic her fashion style, with neon colors, crazy hair and crinoline skirts. There are many pre-made Cyndi Lauper Halloween costumes available, but making your own is easy and fun to do.

Instructions

  1. Familiarize yourself with Cyndi Lauper’s ’80s fashion. When considering Cyndi Lauper Halloween costumes, it is important to understand her overall style. This will help you think with Cyndi Lauper fashion in mind and will get you more realistic Cyndi Lauper Halloween costumes. Lauper’s style included explosions of clashing color. Each clothing piece stood on its own. Accessories were as important as the clothes.
  2. Get an ’80s-style wig, preferably one with multiple hair colors. You can buy pre-made Cyndi Lauper wigs or you can buy a blonde real hair wig and take it to a hair stylist to get it colored and styled. For most costumes the pre-made wig will be cheaper and all that is needed. The real hair wig, will be more expensive but will look more realistic.
  3. Find some bright-colored leggings. Fluorescent colors are perfect for this ’80s costume. Look at thrift stores, dance stores or discount stores for cheap leggings. If you are not a leggings girl, consider wearing fishnet stockings of black or various colors for an equally ’80s look.
  4. Choose bright colored shoes or boots. You can either wear brightly colored pumps that you dye at home or ones found at thrift stores or in friends/family member closets. Choose shoes that do not match the rest of the outfit. If you are concerned about the comfort of pumps, you can safely go with brightly colored flats or even laced up clonky army boots (featured in one of Cyndi Lauper’s most famous ’80s outfits).
  5. Buy or borrow a crinoline skirt. No Cyndi Lauper costume is complete without a brightly colored, billowy crinoline skirt. You can find colored crinoline vintage skirts on auction sites and at thrift stores, dance stores or costume shops.
  6. Find an ’80s style top. When it comes to finding a perfect Cyndi Lauper costume top, consider layers, torn off the shoulder shirts, crazy prints, bustiers and bright colors. Think color explosion, but choose something which you feel comfortable in and suits the rest of the outfit. Look at the other components of your outfit and see what shirt will fit best. You may be able to wear a shirt from your closet, a thrift store or retail store.
  7. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. One of the best you can do to make your outfit fit the ’80s look is to accessorize. Accessories can include bangled bracelets, long earrings, lacy elbow length gloves with the fingers cut off and beaded necklaces. Look to find accessories at vintage stores, today’s accessories stores for tweens, costume shops, the dollar store, thrift stores, auctions sites and retail stores. Also consider making your own accessories by buying beads at a craft store and stringing them yourself.
  8. Don’t forget the make-up. A Cyndi Lauper costume is not complete without the makeup. ’80s make-up was big, bright and bold, and Cyndi’s was no exception. Brightly colored eye shadow and even colored mascara would not be out of place. Start with your regular foundation and powder. Line your top and bottom eyelids heavily with black eyeliner and then use your finger or a sponge to smear it slightly out from the eye. Apply eye shadow in shades of bright orange, blue or green. Apply all the way to the brow line. Curl your eyelashes until they stand up on their own. Apply mass amounts of mascara. Line your lips with a frosty fuschia color or bright pink and fill in. Use pink blush.

How to Gain Overseas Employment After 50

Many workers 50 and older find it hard to get a good paying job. There are opportunities for older workers, however, to start again, get a nest egg for retirement, have an adventure and make good money in overseas employment. Most of these jobs are on a U.S. government contract, and some of these require little experience and older employees make up the bulk of these employees.

Instructions

  1. Determine your seriousness. If you decide to pursue overseas employment, make certain you are really ready go to work overseas. These companies want a commitment when they call. When you fill out and submit your application, or submit a resume, do not be surprised if the company wants you to go on short notice. Starting your processing can take days or weeks, but you must be ready to go on their schedule. Most contracts are for six months, a year or a year renewable. Contracts are just that a contract for as long as there is work. Some jobs may last a short time others may last for years.
  2. Contracts vary, some will be regular 40-hour weeks while some are 84-hour weeks. The contract should specify if it is salary or hourly, what specifically are your duties, what country will you be in, how housing, medical, transportation are covered and what working conditions you should expect. All these things should be asked about before you agree to a position.
  3. The hardest part of applying for these jobs is finding the companies that are hiring. Most have job listings on their web sites once you find who is who in the industry. Be advised, that although you might get hired, if you lie about a criminal past or having back child support payments due, you may not be offered a position. Submit for the jobs you feel you might be qualified for. These companies get paid for filling slots. Obviously, don’t lie, but don’t count yourself out for a job you can do, but have little experience. There is a lot of on the job training on a lot of these jobs.

How to Pick a TV News Agent

Picking a TV news agent is one of the most important decisions you can make in your career as a broadcast journalist. A good agent can open doors otherwise closed to you. An agent can also negotiate more money and better terms than you could on your own. On the other hand, a poor agent can hold your career back and cause you to miss opportunities. Choose your agent wisely and carefully.

Instructions

  1. Determine whether it is time for you to get an agent. If you are new to broadcast journalism, then you probably don’t need one. You can get jobs in small markets by yourself. If you are ready to make the jump to a top 30 market, then it’s time to consider hiring an agent.
  2. Decide what you want your agent to do for you. For example, decide if you want your agent to pitch you to top-level news directors. If so, your agent must have great contacts and long-term relationships with those news directors. On the other hand, if you need an agent only to negotiate a contract for a job you’ve already landed, a media attorney may suffice.
  3. Locate potential agents through industry publications, online directories or recommendations from colleagues.
  4. Ask around about an agent’s reputation. Experience is vital in an agent. If no one has heard of your agent, then no one will pay attention to the agent. Be prepared to hear both positive and negative things. Consider everything you hear, not just the assessments of one or two people.
  5. Be suspicious of an agent who approaches you. There are many “wannabe” agents out there who collect clients in smaller markets hoping that some of them make it to the big time. They don’t do much for their clients because they don’t have much influence in the industry. Check them out first. If no one you ask has heard of them, then move on.
  6. Pitch yourself to the agent of your choice. Most of the time it is up to you to approach an agent. Getting one is like getting a job, so put together your best resume tape and send it in. Follow up with telephone calls and email. If the agent like what she sees, she’ll let you know. If she gives you the run-around, then you’ll know she was not impressed.
  7. Try another agent if you are rejected. Don’t take it personally. You may be very good but not ready for the big time yet. That agent may have too many clients right now, and taking on another isn’t practical. There are a lot of good agents out there, so keep looking until you find one who’s a good fit.
  8. Negotiate a contract with your agent. Understand that once you sign a contract you will be bound to the agent, so be sure you like the terms. Most agents want to take 10% of your salary from any job they get you. Over time, you may be able to negotiate this down. The term is also important, but three years is standard.
  9. Build a relationship with your agent because it’s a partnership that will last years. A good agent will always make your career the first priority and steer you clear of bad situations even if there’s short term gain. A solid relationship is important for mutual trust over the long haul.
  10. Keep in close contact with your agent. Call your agent often whether you are looking for work or in the middle of a contract. You want to keep yourself on their front burner. Don’t be the kind of client who only calls when he needs something.

How to Create Teases for a TV News Report

Write teases for a TV news report that grabs the viewers’ attention in an appropriate way and you appeal to the creative as well as the intellectual and strategic side of the viewer’s brain. Your job is to write enticing TV news report teases that sell the news coverage for all of the news segments.

Instructions

  1. Communicate a single message by finding the best fact in your news story, and then use it to get your viewers’ attention. Promise good news coverage on the topic, but don’t tell the story.
  2. Motivate your viewers with a reason they should watch your news show. Offer information that will benefit the person watching or their family, friends and acquaintances.
  3. Stir the emotions of your audience by using terms that express urgency, immediacy, excitement, humor or touch the sentimental side. Use different levels of energy and enthusiasm according to what is appropriate for the story to write teases for a TV news report.
  4. Research the types of stories that interest the people in your viewing area. This information will help you choose the best story to tease and make a connection with the public.
  5. Keep your tease simple and conversational. You lose your audience’s interest when you use jargon and technical terms many don’t understand.
  6. Use fresh transitional teases from one news segment to the next, and don’t give your audience a reason to leave with words that hint the news show will end soon. Avoid statements such as, “Before we go…,” “A final check on the weather…,” “To wrap it up…” and clichés.
  7. Give attention to transitional teases that move one news segment to the next. The weather talent and the producer should plan the tease that transitions from the news desk to the weatherman, so an anchor doesn’t tell the weather before the forecast is given.

Homemade Halloween Ghost Costumes for Kids

Ghosts and witches often come to mind at the mere mention of Halloween. A child’s ghost costume is classic, easy and fun to wear. Best of all, it’s very inexpensive to make. Using a few simple items that you have around the house, you can make a Halloween costume that will delight your kid and your wallet.

Homemade Halloween Ghost Costumes for Kids

Sheet GhostChoose an old white flat sheet that you don’t need anymore. A twin size sheet works well for a child. Try the sheet on your child by having him hold his arms straight out to the sides. Adjust it so it evenly covers his body from side to side and front to back. Cut the sheet so it doesn’t drag and cause a tripping hazard. Place a baseball cap on his head to keep the sheet from sliding while you mark the eye holes. Take the sheet off and cut the eye holes, making them big enough to allow a full range of vision. When he wears the costume, make sure his clothes are white or tan underneath so they don’t show through the sheet.

Sheet Ghost VariationsA hat can be worn with a traditional ghost costume to give it a little distinction. Let your child choose one that reflects him best: a baseball cap, cowboy hat or something else. Wearing a hat also helps keep the eye holes in place. A belt can be worn at the waist area and then the sheet can be pulled to drape over it. Sunglasses can be worn over the costume to conceal the child’s eyes. Long white gloves can be worn on his hands. A bicycle helmet can be worn under the costume to better drape the sheet and hide facial features. You can also cut out black felt to create a mouth, either happy or scary, or use it to make the eyes appear bigger and more dramatic. And, if you want your ghost to have a soundtrack, you can have creepy music playing in speaker mode from a digital music player in his pocket.

Ghostly PersonA ghostly person’s costume leaves the child’s head fully exposed, which works well if he has an aversion to covering his face. It’s also easier to wear to school. Dress your child completely in white; you can use baggy clothes like an adult sweatshirt or t-shirt. Buy a few yards of muslin (or any lightweight, open-weave white fabric) at a fabric store. Drape the muslin all around your child, tying it up where necessary so it’s comfortable for him. Use white face paint (applied faintly) on his face, neck and hands. Use black, gray, green or dark blue face paint lightly all around his eyes so they look hollowed out, and use some on his cheekbones as well. Spray-paint his hair white or grey, or he can wear a white stocking cap.

How to Become a Television News Anchor

The job of a television news anchor is not an easy one. It can be challenging and require long hours and commitment. It is a high stress profession and very competitive, meaning that those individuals who succeed have to be at the top of the game. It can also be rewarding, exciting and glamorous, leading to additional opportunities for advancement in your career, if you take the appropriate steps.

Instructions

  1. Go to college and get a degree in broadcast journalism. You will learn how to report news, develop your voice and style, produce and edit news segments, among other essential job functions. You can also become knowledgeable about standards of the profession, as well as become familiar with the legal aspects associated with the media. It takes at least four years to get a Bachelor’s degree and it will involve more time, if you choose to pursue a graduate degree.
  2. Write well. This will be an advantage to you professionally some day, since more seasoned news reporters and anchors often have to write their own copy.
  3. Do an internship. It will give you a real-life look at what working in the news industry is like. Many television stations have internships available, but you may have to be willing to take the position without being paid and to put up with performing a lot of thankless tasks. Call the television stations in your local area and ask about how you can apply as an intern in the television news department. Once you become an intern, go above and beyond what is expected and take every opportunity to make yourself indispensable.
  4. Become a member of a professional broadcast journalist organization. You will get the chance to network with others in your field, get advice from more seasoned veterans and find out about available job openings.
  5. Be aggressive about going after your first job and be willing to accept openings at television stations that might require you to relocate. Find out about the specific guidelines for each station you submit your resume tape to and make sure that the resume showcases you at your very best. There are at least 50 other applicants competing for the same entry-level position you want, so do all you can to make yourself stand out.
  6. Ace your interview. Appearance counts, especially since you are applying for a job in television news. Wear an attractive suit that fits well and make sure your hair is neat and that your makeup is subtle. Be on time and make certain that your breath and body don’t have an odor. You should look sharp and confident. Show the interviewer that you are current on important news topics internationally, nationally and on the local front and be prepared to talk about them. Discuss ideas you have about unique stories you think would be good to report on.
  7. If you are hired in an entry-level job, go out of your way to prove your skills. Be willing to do what you are asked to do and learn the ropes by doing whatever field reporting assignments you are given. Volunteer for additional assignments that nobody else wants and turn them into something that catches the interest of viewers and newsroom execs. With hard work, persistence and dogged determination, you can work your way up to an anchor position, if you are willing to sacrifice your time and personal life to make it happen.

How to Internally Apply for a Job at Lowe’s

x
Lowe’s is the second-largest home-improvement and hardware chain in the country, with over 160,000 employees, so it offers employment opportunities in a wide variety of fields. As a current employee, it is perfectly acceptable to try to transfer from your current position to one that more closely matches your skills and interests, or provides greater responsibility and pay. The process of finding and applying for a position internally is similar to applying for a job as a non-employee. However, in order for the system to process your application properly, you will need to go through the internal employee portal rather than the public career portal.

Instructions

  1. Log in to the Lowe’s Employee Portal at the website at myloweslife.com.
  2. Click on the “My Lowe’s Life” tab.
  3. Click on “Lowe’s Career Opportunities” in the HR Quick Links sidebar on the right-hand side of the screen.
  4. Click on “Search Openings.”
  5. Under “Location #,” select the four-digit number for your store and click “Search.” If you are searching for a position at another store, enter the city or zip code into the proximity search at the bottom of the page.
  6. Check the box next to one or more jobs you wish to apply for and click “Apply to job(s).”
  7. Answer the questions provided on the next several pages

What Is Job Security?

Job security is an employee’s assurance or confidence that they will keep their current job. Employees with a high level of job security has a low probability of losing their job in the near future. Certain professions or employment opportunities inherently have better job security than others; job security is also affected by a worker’s performance, success of the business and the current economic environment.

Facts

  • A good indicator of the current job security held by the majority of the workforce is the strength or weakness of the business environment; job security is often reflected by the country’s unemployment rate and whether the country is in an economic expansion or recession. Personal job security is affected more by factors such as education, experience, skills, performance and abilities. The more an organization needs an employee’s specific skills and experience, the greater the job security. The less specialized these skills become, the less job security enjoyed because of the easy availability of a replacement.

Significance

  • An employee with a high level of job security will often perform and concentrate better than an employee who is in constant fear of losing a job. Although this fear can increase motivation in certain situations, a lack of job security can be a source of distraction and result in excess stress and low morale that hinders an employee’s overall performance.

Types

  • Some careers have better job security because of their significant and necessary contributions to society. These careers include most positions in government, education, law enforcement, firefighting and health care; all of these professions enjoy high levels of job security compared with most private sector jobs.

Considerations

  • Many industries and professions have seen a decrease in job security because of the growth and popularity of offshoring. Jobs subjected to offshoring can be performed with a similar quality at significantly less costs overseas. Organizations are moving production facilities and call centers to different countries to reduce the costs of doing business. In the information technology industry, this is often seen as a quick and easy way to save companies money.

Misconceptions

  • Although the economy and job performance are the two most influential factors of job security, security can be increased through other avenues that are often overlooked. Some employers offer increased job security through collective bargaining agreements, employment contracts or with labor legislation that prevents arbitrary layoffs by the company.

8 Easy Halloween Costumes for Kids

It took me only one Halloween of forgetting that one last thing I needed for a costume to realize that standing in line at a party store on October 30 is a horrendous experience. I might be the overzealous type when it comes to Halloween because I make costume plans with my kids far in advance, but I know from watching my mom while growing up that laboring over hand-sewn costumes eventually balances out with years of scrambling around the house looking for anything that might resemble a costume. My brother should know. He once wore my mom’s black church skirt folded over a white pillowcase on his head to make him a nun.

Necessity is the mother of invention — and sometimes the best costume ideas are born from excavating your closet 10 minutes before a Halloween party.

Need some costume ideas this year that will save you some money? You can create these quick kid costumes in a matter of minutes — and most from things you already have in your home.

Cut a little flair (jagged edges) to a green T-shirt (size up so it works as a dress on little ones) and pair it with some green tights to create a simple poison ivy costume. Wrap an artificial ivy garland around your child’s shoulders, pull a few leaves off and secure them with bobby pins in her hair, and finish the look by painting some green leaves on her face and sprinkling with face glitter. Have her carry a bottle of calamine lotion — and she’ll have onlookers scratching their skin in no time.child in poison ivy costume

Chimney Sweeper

materials needed for chimney sweeper costume

I scraped together everything here from our closets and drawers. Chimney sweepers wear pretty basic clothes. All you need is a red bandana to tie it off, a newsboy cap (we stole ours from little brother’s closet), some dirt and grime (with the help of eye makeup) and a broom from the garage.

Car Mechanic
materials needed for car mechanic costume
Anything denim works great to create a car mechanic costume. To pull it together, just add a homemade mechanic name tag, a baseball cap and some grease stains using makeup. To make it even better, have him carry a can of motor oil and include a ride-on car for trick-or-treating.

Little Red Riding Hood
materials needed for little red riding hood costume
Most kids’ closets have a few red things, and whether you use a dress or pair a red shirt and pants together, the thing that pulls this costume together is the cape. You can easily fold this yard of fabric to fit any child and tuck it around her head as a hood (secure with a large safety pin under the chin). No sewing needed. Tie a thin red ribbon at the safety pin to finish it off — and add a cute basket. Watch out for the wolf!

Painter

Have a creative little one? She’ll love this easy artist costume and will love helping you decorate the apron even more. Most craft stores sell inexpensive aprons for children. Splatter a bit of acrylic paint on it and top off the costume with a wool beret. I easily created the painter’s palette by cutting a piece of cardboard into the desired shape and painting some colored circles on it. Add a paintbrush, and there you have it — a masterpiece!

Fraulein Maria
materials needed for sound of music costume
My favorite costume of the bunch, this Fraulein Maria outfit begs for some twirling and heel kicking and a nice round of “I have confidence in sunshine!” Any long skirt will do for this. Just add a cardigan, a wide-brim hat (this one is Mama’s and it worked just fine) and a large purse. If you don’t have a guitar, ask a guitar-playing friend if you can borrow his  case, or any toy guitar will do.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Diamonds might not be a little girl’s best friend, but fake ones sure do look cute with a black dress for this Breakfast at Tiffany’s Costume. If your daughter doesn’t have a black dress, have no fear. Use a women’s tank top, which will look like a chic sleeveless dress on a child. Add costume jewels and wrap some sparkly bling around a little bun for the perfect Audrey look — and then top it off with some big sunglasses and a light blue gift bag. You can skip the cigarette.

Granny
materials needed for child granny costume
The vintage and old-fashioned trends come in handy for this costume. A long skirt, blouse and crochet cardigan quickly become grandma’s knitting outfit when you add a pair of reading glasses and a knitting project. The fun part comes, though, when you turn your child’s hair gray. Pour a generous amount of baby powder in her hair, massage it through until the hair looks gray, and tidy it all up into a nice granny bun. Then teach her how to pinch cheeks and say, “Sonny, we need to put some meat on those bones!”

How to Make a Kid’s Zombie Costume for Halloween

Zombies costumes are perfect for kids because they are simple and inexpensive to make, and kids will have a great time destroying old clothes and practicing their most ghoulish zombie walk. The basis for this costume is a shirt and pants that you don’t mind destroying. If you don’t have a pair of old pants and a shirt, visit a local thrift store for inexpensive options. Because zombies are simply undead people from all walks of life, you can choose anything from a basic T-shirt and jeans to a uniform for a zombie Boy Scout or Brownie.
How to Make a Kid's Zombie Costume for Halloween
Step 1:Cut holes and rips into the shirt and pants and cut the edges into tatters with scissors. Run a disposable razor along the edges of each cut to create a frayed look.

Step 2:Soak your shirt and pants in a bowl of coffee or tea overnight to give clothes an old yellowed look. This works best on lighter colors. Hang clothes outside to dry.

Step 3:Rub clothes into the dirt and grass outside. Sprinkle fake blood over them while they’re still on the ground and let them dry. Kids will have fun getting involved in this step, because destroying clothes is usually not allowed.

Step 4:Put on the shirt and pants. Cook a handful of rice or spaghetti that is cut it into small pieces. Let kids run their fingers through the slimy spaghetti or rice and sprinkle it over their clothing to look like maggots.

Step 5:Apply white face makeup all over and add purple makeup under the eyes. Apply fake blood underneath the lower lip.

Step 6:Add hairspray or gel to hair and let kids run their fingers through it to make it as messy as they want. Sprinkle flour throughout hair to create a recently buried dusty look.

What Is the Difference Between a Profession & an Occupation?

The terms “profession” and “occupation” are often used interchangeably to refer to the job that a person holds or, more generally, the career field in which he’s in. However, the term profession refers to a particular category of occupations, ones that require significant training and the use of strict standards. While a profession is an occupation, an occupation is not necessarily a profession.

Profession

  • A profession refers to a type of job in which the person is required to have completed significant higher eduction, often a graduate degree or higher. Some traditional professions are being a doctor, lawyer and engineer, as all require significant study. A person practicing a profession must have a lot of specialized training in his field, which allows him to possess a large amount of specialized knowledge.

Occupation

  • A person who holds an occupation does not necessarily have a large amount of specialized knowledge, nor did he necessarily receive a higher education. While the profession of a doctor is a type of occupation, so is the job of a janitor. In addition, the term “occupation” can refer to the thing that a person spends most of his time doing, whether he is compensated for it or not.

Major Differences

  • There are a number of key differences between an occupation and a profession. Among these are the fact that a professional is paid for his skills and his knowledge, while a person with an occupation is only paid for what he produces. In addition, a professional has most of the responsibility related to his job, while a person with an occupation usually has a supervisor.

Considerations

  • The use of the term “occupation” instead of “profession” can actually emphasize the fact that the job being discussed is not a profession, but is another kind of job. An occupation that is not a profession generally allows the person less autonomy. However, the difference between profession and occupation is sometimes unclear. For example, while some people would consider certain white collar jobs to be professions, others would consider them occupations.

How to Make Funny Adult Halloween Costumes at Home

Making your own Halloween costume is a creative and economical way to enjoy the holiday. Halloween costumes are expensive and often you only wear them one time. Adult costumes can be particularly expensive. You do not have to be an artist or especially talented to create a hilarious costume. All it takes is a little imagination and a few simple items to construct a funny and inexpensive outfit for Halloween and costume parties.

Silk leaves will make a ghoulish swamp monster costume.

Swamp Person Costume

  1. Glue leaves all over your outfit by using a hot glue gun, according to the Martha Stewart website. Larger silk plants, like philodendrons or pothos will cover the area quickly and you can separate the leaves by using wire cutters. You can find inexpensive silk leaves at discount stores and hobby and craft stores.
  2. Use ivy or any other type of silk leaf garland to create vines going up or around your outfit. You can simply glue them at various places to ensure they do not fall off.
  3. Cover as much of your outfit as you choose in the green leaves, but the more your clothing is covered the better your swamp costume will look, particularly on the front of your outfit.
  4. Glue acorns, small pinecones or twigs to your clothes to enhance the look of your outfit. Avoid placing these items anywhere they will be uncomfortable if you sit down on them. You can even add rubber or plastic fake frogs, worms or fish to enhance the look of the swamp costume.
  5. Spray your hair with temporary spray-on hair color and place a few twigs in your hair.
  6. Spread green face paint all over your face and your arms if they are showing.

Highway Pileup

  1. Paint stripes onto a black sweat suit to create the look of a highway. You can use white paint for the middle lanes and yellow paint for the sides of the highway. Colored masking tape or duct or painters tape would also work for this. Let the highway extend from your ankle all the way up to your chest area.
  2. Glue inexpensive toy cars from a dollar store or garage sale to the highway by using a hot glue gun. Place them intermittently all up and down your painted highway.
  3. Create a pileup of cars by hot gluing three or four cars together at odd angles and on top of each other.

How to Teach English About Activities & Occupations to Children

English is a difficult language to learn but breaking the subject into units and focusing on one aspect at a time can make the process easier for children, especially those whose first language is not English. These units also teach very young children about other aspects of our society. For instance, units on occupations and activities not only teach children the vocabulary dealing with these subjects but also what the subjects themselves entail. Follow these steps to use occupations and activities to teach an English lesson to your children or students.

Instructions

  1. Introduce the vocabulary and have students practice saying the word by repeating it after you. Then discuss each word as a class. For instance, one occupation might be a doctor. First ask students what they think a doctor does. Show them a picture of a doctor so they have a visual representation of the word.
  2. Allow students to venture their guesses and then echo the correct answer. For example, a doctor takes care of sick people to make them better. Then have students repeat the word and the definition back to you.
  3. Ask students to identify aspects of a doctor. Have them tell you what a doctor wears and what kinds of tools he uses as these will help them identify the occupation later.
  4. Engage the children in a game that uses the new vocabulary they have learned about occupations and activities. An example might be the Who am I? game. You describe the occupation or activity and have children guess the answer. When they get the answer correct, it is their turn to describe a different job or activity for the class.
  5. Practice examples with students in which they use the words in a sentence. This not only helps their context comprehension of the word, it also allows them to practice their grammar. Give a few examples yourself, then have students give examples of their own.
  6. Finish the lesson by giving students worksheets pertaining to the new vocabulary that they can work on by themselves. Many different types from crosswords to fill-in-the-blanks are available for printing online. Some good websites to start with might be ESL Tower and English Exercises.

How to Become an Anchorwoman

x

An anchorwoman, also known as a news anchor, is the face or voice behind a news broadcast, whether the broadcast is on television, radio or the Internet. This isn’t an entry level job — it takes many years to become a news anchor. You must work your way up and prove that you have great communication skills and can work well under pressure.

News Anchor Duties

  • An anchorwoman may lead a broadcast via television, the radio or even online. Her main job is to report on issues in the news. However, in some cases she might provide her own personal commentary and analysis to help people understand what’s happening. She might also lead interviews with guests, depending on the focus of the show. The news she reports on could be local, national or international, depending on they type of station or network she works for.

Education Requirements

  • Most news anchors have at least a bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications. If you want to be a specialized news anchor, then you’ll want to get a degree in that specialization. For example, an aspiring weather anchorwoman might seek a degree in meteorology, while an aspiring sports anchor might need either a sports journalism degree or a general journalism degree with a specialty in sports reporting. In all cases, aspiring anchorwomen should focus on broadcast journalism in college and take classes that let her have time in front of the camera or microphone to hone her on-air skills. Also, seek work at the college radio or TV station, if there is one, to gain practical experience.

Climbing the Ladder

  • You won’t be able to get your first news anchor job without any prior news reporting experience. In fact, you need to stand out as a reporter to advance to become an anchorwoman. You typically start out as a reporter covering local or national news such as crime scenes, government meetings and investigative reports. In this role, you must gain a reputation for reliability, accuracy, news judgment and high-quality reporting. Some people opt to work as an intern first and then move on to a full-time reporter job. After you’ve gained credibility as a reporter, you can start applying for anchor jobs.

Personal Qualifications

  • An anchorwoman must be calm under pressure and show poise in front of the camera. She must be a quick thinker who is able to change gears suddenly as breaking news happens. An anchorwoman should also be outgoing. She should be a skilled interviewer who can maintain her professionalism when an interviewee becomes hostile or aggressive, and compassionate enough to bring an introverted interviewee out of his shell. She should be curious about the world, knowledgeable about current events and have a charisma that translates well across her medium, whether it’s television, radio or online. She should be able to speak about complex situations succinctly and be persistent to pursue stories despite obstacles.

Salary and Outlook

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics categorizes news anchors as broadcast news analysts. As of 2012, these professionals earned a median annual income of $55,380 a year. According to the BLS, jobs for analysts and reporters will decline by 13 percent between 2012 and 2022. This is due to declining ad revenues as news moves to digital platforms and news agencies consolidate and downsize.

How to Dress Like a School Teacher for Halloween

Embrace your inner teacher and bring in the grades this Halloween. School teacher costumes can run the gamut from mundane to racy. These costumes are easily pulled together with the clothing most people already own and just a few handmade accessories. Many school teacher costumes can be made in just a matter of minutes and with few supplies.

Transform into your inner school teacher.

Nerdy Teacher

  • The nerdy teacher costume should include black pants, a white button-front shirt and suspenders. This outfit can be easily personalized with a few accessories. Select a wildly printed necktie and cut the bottom third off, and then hem it. Use white sports tape in the center of a pair of glasses to indicate the frames have been repaired. Create your own pocket protector with two pieces of card stock and some white duct tape. Simply cut one piece of card stock 4 5/8 x 3 3/4 inches. Cut the second piece of card stock 1 inch shorter. Tape the pieces of paper together on three sides, and cover with duct tape. Cut another piece of paper that measures 1 x 3 3/4 inches. Cover this piece of paper with duct tape and tape it to the front edge of the pocket protector. Mess up your hair and spray it in place. Pat it with white powder to create the appearance of chalk dust.

Elementary School Teacher

  • Select modest clothing such as a pair of trousers, a button-front shirt and cardigan. Add jewelry items that look as though they’ve been created by school children. Make a simple pasta necklace. Place pasta noodles on toothpicks and dip noodles into acrylic paint. Set the toothpicks into a recycled meat tray to dry. Once they’re dry, string them on a cord and then tie the ends. Construct a tissue paper flower brooch for the front of your cardigan. Layer several pieces of tissue paper and fold to make a fan. Tie a piece of string in the middle and then cut the ends of the paper so that the paper is curved. Bend the paper upwards and pull it apart until a flower forms. Hot glue a pin back onto the back of the flower.

Sexy School Teacher

  • Select a knee-length pencil skirt, button-up shirt with rolled sleeves and librarian-styled glasses. Pull your hair up into a messy bun with a pencil sticking through its center, or wear it in low pigtails. Have fun with accessories. Make a riding crop for use on naughty students. Use an 18-inch dowel rod and hot glue a 1 x 4-inch piece of leather to one end. Add hot glue along the length of the dowel rod and wrap it with leather. Create a sexy school teacher necklace out of a dog collar and rhinestones. Rub the leather with alcohol and let it dry. Randomly hot glue rhinestones to its surface.

Prop Ideas

  • Complete any school teacher costume with the use of props. Use an oversize calculator as a prop for the nerdy teacher costume. Carry a personal chalkboard printed with the ABCs for the elementary teacher costume. Clip a pair of handcuffs to the belt loop of the sexy teacher’s skirt.

How to Make a Barbarella Halloween Costume

Although the movie is decades old, Jane Fonda’s “Barbarella” continues to be one of those fantasy characters that men can’t seem to get enough of seeing. Perhaps it is due in part to the futuristic aspect of her story, but the real reason has much more to due with her sex appeal. Therefore, this sexy siren is the ideal choice for any woman looking to spice up an all-adult Halloween party.

Instructions

  1. Buy a long, curly wig and/or hair extensions if long hair isn’t natural to the person who will wear the costume.
  2. Set the hair, extensions, or wig in soft waves that curl at the end. Part of Barbarella’s appeal was her luxurious tresses.
  3. Find an old dance leotard. The color really doesn’t matter so it may be possible to use something already on hand. However, make certain that it isn’t too revealing. If a leotard isn’t in the closet, shop for one at local department stores or boutiques that carry dance attire.
  4. Choose opaque tights. Since leotards tend to be a bit skimpy in nature, tights will help to keep everything in check. Choose the same color or a complimentary color to the leotard. Adult leotards can be found in many department stores and on many Websites.
  5. Shop for a sheer poncho or bed jacket; preferably one that matches the leotard and tights. Thrift stores are one possible source. However, lingerie stores often offer a broader range of options. If you cannot find one, move on to the next step.
  6. Borrow or purchase knee high to thigh high boots if they aren’t already in the closet. The color should match or compliment the rest of the costume.
  7. Apply make up. Create heavy lined eyes and glossy lips. Be generous with your application of make up for this character.
  8. Pick subtle jewelry like small to medium sized hoops or diamond studs. Choose a big, cocktail ring. Add a long chain around the neck. Don’t overdo the jewelry. Keep it plain and simple.

If you’re a guy who wants a one-of-a-kind costume and wants to save some cash, create your own costume at home.

You’ll instantly be recognized as a “quarterback.” You can leave the costume as is, or add further accessories by drawing black lines under your eyes and carry around a football.

Highway to Hell

  • Turn the famous ACDC song “Highway to Hell” into a Halloween costume with some basic supplies. Once again, dress in a pair of black pants and a black shirt. Blow up a picture of a highway sign and attach it to the front of your shirt. Complete the transformation by sporting a pair of devil horns and a devil’s tale and carry around a pitch fork.

Dude Looks Like a Lady

  • This homemade guy costume idea is based on the song by Aerosmith. Raid your mom, sister, girlfriend or spouse’s closet, or purchase inexpensive ladies attire from a second hand or discount shop. To complete the look, apply some makeup — blush and lipstick are a must — put on a wig and carry around a purse.

Lawsuit

  • If you have a suit in your closet, you can easily transform yourself into a “lawsuit.” Print out different laws on pieces of paper and attach the paper to the jacket and pants of your suit with safety pins. Put on the suit and you’ll instantly become a lawsuit.

Zoro

  • To dress up as this masked hero, you’ll need a few basic supplies. Purchase a black eye mask, a black hat and a toy sword. Dress in a pair of black pants and a black button down shirt. Tie a piece of black material around your neck to create a cape and put on the hat and eye mask. Carry around the sword and as you walk around, use the sword to make a letter “Z” in the air.

How to Get a Job With No Experience

Finding employment with no job experience may seem daunting, but many opportunities exist for people with little or no work experience. Many businesses, like clothing stores and restaurants, hire workers with no job experience and provide on-the-job training. With careful research and with a well-written resume, you may soon find yourself with your very first job.

Entry-level jobs are stepping stones.

Instructions

  1. Keep an open mind about the employment opportunities available to you. You may not want to work as a waitress or sales clerk, but these jobs may lead to a managerial position. Entry-level jobs provide the necessary stepping stones for you to progress to higher positions.
  2. Create a resume. Even if you have no work experience, nearly all businesses will ask you to provide a resume before they consider hiring you. Your resume may include: your level of education, any leadership positions you have held (captain of a sports team or president of a club), your set of skills (typing, researching, writing, organizing), and two or three references. Your references should be people who know you well and who can vouch that you are a responsible and hard-working person. (Consider asking a teacher, religious leader, neighbor or family friend to be a reference. Do not ask family members to act as your references.) Your resume should fit onto one page and should be printed on 8.5-by-11-inch white paper.
  3. Start networking. Many people obtain jobs through social networking. Ask your family and friends about job opportunities at their place of employment; let them know you are looking for a job and ask them to tell you about any job openings they may hear about. Also, visit local restaurants, stores and other businesses you frequent to inquire about any open positions.
  4. Look for entry-level positions in the newspaper or search online at sites like Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com. Choose a few jobs that interest you and fill out an application form. You should also consider job fields that often hire workers with little or no experience. Head to a shopping mall, grocery store, movie theater or community center to see if they are hiring. You may want to search the job boards at your local community center, too. Often, these boards are filled with part-time and entry-level positions for child care, elderly care or small handy jobs like lawn-mowing and weeding.
  5. Consider an internship or volunteer opportunities. Obtaining an internship or signing up as a volunteer are useful ways to build your resume and get practical job experience. Some internships also provide a small stipend. To attain an internship or to become a volunteer, research companies or organizations that peak your interest (an animal shelter, a community theater or a local business). Contact the human resources department to see if any internship or volunteer opportunities are available at the organization. If the company is in need of an intern or volunteer, fill out any necessary application forms and arrange a time for an interview. Alternately, you may search for internships online at Internships.com.
  6. Register with a temporary agency. Temporary agencies, often called temp agencies, align their workers with short-term jobs. At times, these short-term positions turn into full-time jobs. Find a temp agency in your area (such as Kelly Services or the American Staffing Association) and register to become one of their workers. You will need to provide the agency with a list of your skills and any pertinent experience you have. You may also need to take a drug test.

How to Find a Job If You’re on Parole

The portion of a prison sentence served in the community rather than in a correctional institution is called parole. A parole board meets and reviews the specifics of each situation and interviews the parole applicant to determine if parole is warranted. For most parolees, finding a job is the next step after winning freedom.

Find a Job While You’re on Parole

  1. Start looking for a job before parole is granted. Inmates eligible for parole are notified before their hearing by a case manager.
  2. Determine if there are any jobs you cannot have. Certain jobs are barred by the parole commission.
  3. Call your parole officer often. Parole officers are experienced at helping parolees find stable, long-term employment.
  4. Utilize all social service and job placement agencies at your disposal. The US Department of Justice can help you locate employers who hire parolees in your area (see Resources below).
  5. Contact the ACLU immediately if you believe you are being discriminated against during your job hunt. The ACLU can help steer you toward a victims advocacy group to combat discrimination and can spell out your rights and obligations as a parolee (see Resources below).
  6. Contact the head of your local place of worship and explain your situation. He or she may be able to suggest employers who are willing to hire parolees.
  7. Keep trying. Many parolees report difficulty finding and keeping jobs. Steady employment is a requirement for most parolees, so it is crucial that you remain optimistic. Follow up with your parole officer after every interview.

The Difference Between a Job, Occupation & Career

Job, occupation and career all relate to the same thing — what you do to earn your living. The difference between these terms is more than semantics. Understanding the differences can help you figure out what it is you want to do for a living.

x

Occupation Is a Broad Concept

  • Your occupation is a broad term that encompasses your employment sector or the category of jobs into which you fit. You could also describe it as your area of interest. If you want to be a reporter for an online news magazine, for instance, reporter might be your job or career, but your occupation is broader — you’re a journalist.

A Job Is Temporary

  • A job is generally a means to an end — a temporary step you take to build a career. In a job, you acquire a paycheck and valuable experience that leads to your next job. The series of jobs becomes your career. If your ultimate goal is to become an attorney, you may benefit from working as a legal assistant to gain knowledge and experience to meet your career goals.

A Career Is Long-Term

  • Careers are more than just paychecks at the end of a pay period. A career is a lifelong journey that builds on your specific skills, knowledge and experience. Careers generally bring you a sense of achievement or accomplishment. If you choose well, your career is something you genuinely love doing.

Finding Your Career

  • Identifying and building your career is typically your goal as you start out in the working world. If you attended college or had a favorite major in high school, you may have already started the path to choosing your career, which often requires analyzing your specific skills and interests. Sometimes finding a career means working several jobs just to try different things. Finding your career is a deeply personal search, but there are resources available. Career guidance counselors can help you narrow down potential avenues that fit your specific skill set and interests.

How to Get a Job Doing TV News

The anchors you see reading the nightly news are far from the only professionals on a TV news staff. If you’re interested in working in this field, you might pursue a career as a videographer who shoots the stories, a producer who organizes the flow of the show, a writer who writes the news, a reporter who covers breaking stories, a video editor or even an assignment editor who scouts out the stories worth covering. Whatever specialty you choose, you’ll get your start through a mix of education and experience.

x

What You’ll Study

  • The first requirement for landing a TV news job is having the right education. You’ll typically need a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field, such as English or film. If your college offers courses in broadcasting, or perhaps even a specialty degree in broadcasting, take those courses. More general coursework in the principles of journalism is also a good start. Some aspiring journalists opt to earn a master’s degree in journalism as well, although it’s not generally required for most journalism jobs.

Getting Your Feet Wet

  • As with most professions, you’ll need to start gaining experience as early as possible. If your school has a newspaper, magazine or campus TV program, join it. If not, you can also gain experience by starting your own online blog or podcast or by volunteering at a community radio or TV station. While having TV or video experience is best, having any sort of journalism experience is better than none. After college, get more work experience — and industry connections — through internships or by freelancing for smaller news stations or newspapers.

Demonstrating Your Skills

  • All journalists need to maintain a portfolio that shows the types of work they have done and what they’re capable of doing. If you aspire to be a reporter, anchor, video editor or videographer, that might mean collecting video clips and putting them together on a “reel” — basically a DVD or online video file you can show to prospective employers. For writers or producers, you may need to compile a document that demonstrates your best written work and also produce a video reel. Some journalists opt to create an online portfolio; others use a mix of paper portfolio and online or DVD video clips. When you find a job you want, you’ll provide employers access to the reel and portfolio, as well as a well-written cover letter and resume.

Where to Find Jobs

  • Expect fierce competition even for the jobs at small-market TV stations — as well as relatively low pay. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, all professions in the field of journalism are expected to decline between 2012 and 2022. The median wage as of 2012 was $35,870. You’ll likely need to work at a small-town TV station before you can land a job in cities such as New York, Los Angeles or Atlanta. Landing an internship — typically unpaid — at a station where you would like to work can increase your odds of getting a job there, although the competition for internships can also be pretty stiff. You may need to take several internships and be open to part-time or freelance work to get your foot in the door. Also keep in mind that working at a TV station is just one avenue to pursue. Don’t overlook jobs for Web-only publications, prominent blogs with video channels or jobs for private businesses that focus on video, film or even radio production.

How to Make Ant Costumes for Kids

Join the witches, monsters and ghouls on Halloween by becoming a creepy crawler. Make a black, brown or red ant costume with minimal sewing, using clothes and other items from your old-clothes bin or resale shop. Whether you create a costume for a child or adult, these ants will have no trouble finding sugar during trick or treat.

Creepy creatures are frightfully fun on Halloween.

Instructions

  1. Make ant legs out of the tights by cutting off the legs at the panty line. The legs should be about three-fourths of the length of the outstretched arm of the person wearing the costume.
  2. Stuff the legs with fiberfill until they hold their shape. Stitch the opening closed with needle and thread.
  3. Make joints in the legs by twisting each leg in the middle several times to make two sausage-like sections. Hold the joint in place with a rubber band.
  4. Ask the costume wearer to put on the shirt and pants to help gauge where the ant legs should be attached. With the legs facing forward, pin a leg to each side of the shirt at about waist level, and to the pants at the outside of each knee.
  5. Test the comfort and safety of the costume by having the wearer move around. Make sure they can move freely without tripping and use their arms unimpeded. Reposition the legs if necessary. Sew the legs to the clothes with needle and thread and remove the pins.
  6. Curl the end of each pipe cleaner into a circle to make antennas. Stick the the pipe cleaner through a headband and sew in place.
  7. Stitch a cotton ball to each side of the headband to make bug eyes.

How to Make Halloween Costumes for Couples

Halloween is not just a holiday for children anymore. Adults are attending costume parties and are dreaming up elaborate couples costumes. Purchasing or renting costumes is easy but can be expensive. With a little imagination, you can make your own couples costumes.

Famous People

  1. Listen to the news and read the newspaper to find which rich and famous people are hot at the moment. There is always a pop star or politician who has captured the country’s attention. These make perfect models for costumes.
  2. Determine if your celebrity or politician has a famous spouse or friend that your partner can imitate. Your partner can also be a manager, parole officer, DEA agent or a vice-squad cop depending on why your celeb is in the news. Let your imagination run wild.
  3. Keep your costume simple. Pick out the most noticeable feature of your famous person and concentrate on that. If it’s something like long blond hair or a big nose, you can purchase those items from a costume store.
  4. Pick out your clothes from second-hand stores. These places have bargains on fancy gowns, suits and shoes. Since the clothes are inexpensive, you can embellish them or cut them up without regret.
  5. Accessorize with fake fingernails, makeup and gaudy jewelry from a one-price store. Depending on why your celeb is on the news, you can make a fake bag of cocaine out of powdered sugar or hang an old car license tag around your neck for that newly-convicted look.

Scary Costumes

  1. Choose scary couples costumes for easy yet fun possibilities. Vampires are easy with store-bought teeth, green face paint, black clothes and black capes made from old sheets dyed black.
  2. Make scary sports costumes if you and your partner are on sports teams together. Wear your uniforms, paint your face in scary colors and buy some fake teeth. Carry a fake axe instead of a baseball bat or tote a fake head as your soccer ball.
  3. Dress as a scary version of your day job for an easy costume choice. Doctors, nurses, lawyers, construction workers and dentists make easy transformations to scary versions. Add fun wigs, fake blood and scary face paint and you’re good to go.
